Hi everyone, happy Sunday! Today, I wanted to share another Thaler that I was about to source recently. It’s actually a first as a TYPE for my type set: it’s a Bishopric Thaler. That is, this piece was issued by the Archbishop of Mainz, Anselm Francis. Generally, according to Coinvarities, “the archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. The archbishops issued a variety of thalers in the seventeenth century but none are common.” Particularly, this 1680 Thaler — the same date as my Transylvanian one—is one of four according to the NGC Price Guide. Here, there is mine, a 1680 MF. There is also 1682 AL, 1682 MF, 1682 VBW and one from 1685, according to Coinvarities.

This piece features the bust of the Archbishop, Anselm Franz, facing right, on the obverse. The reverse features the helmeted arms, plus the mintmark “MF.” This refers to Mathias Fischer, the Mint Master from Mainz (1652-1684).

This piece has been graded by NGC as an AU 58 and is quite nice in hand. The strike and details are sharp with no weakness—I really like the coat of arms and the wheels—which represent Mainz. The patina is attractive and original and I really love the details on the clothes of the Archbishop. As usual for these roller pressed types, there is some planchet stress and flaws mostly found on the obverse field. Nothing too serious, I would say. Overall, I love the old timey patina to it! And my first ever bishopric thaler from an old American collection that I have been slowly exploring and getting into.

It’s pedigreed to the Brand Collection and was first seen publicly in a Leu Auction 69 of June 1997 as Lot 4676. Quite an interesting pedigree and now it is in my humble European Crowns -- specifically, Thalers, type set!
