INTRODUCTION OF THE SPECIAL COMMISTIONS & MEDAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT OF SPINK
By Edward Hilary Davis
Most will easily recognise Spink as a leading auction house in Collectables. However, when Spink was founded 352 years ago in 1666, London, it was family company of goldsmiths and silversmiths making various artistic pieces from precious metals. Through the centuries this developed in to jewellery making, bespoke objects d’art and, eventually, medals.
The Special Commissions & Medal Services department is currently the oldest existing department in Spink. Having made medals throughout the 19th century, it received its first Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria after producing the medals for her Diamond Jubilee in 1897. To this day, Spink provides medals and as such is a Royal Medallist – currently holding two Royal Warrants as such from HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh.
Spink has international acclaim as a world class provider of Orders Decorations and Medals to many different Kingdoms, Sultanates and nations across the world. This acclaim stretches into the realms of State gifts and special commissions– specially designed, bespoke items, of precious stones and metals, from sculptures and jewellery, to trophies and desk items. Today, this bespoke department of Spink’s is based at the London office, regularly designing new jewellery, medals and other custom gifts.
On 28th May, staff, guests and clients joined to watch the grand final of the Spink Cicero Cup from the shady veranda of the clubhouse at Cowdray Park Polo Club in West Sussex. The Spink Special Commissions Department have produced the highly coveted, and highly collectable Members’ and Players’ badges for the match.
Each table in the venue was adorned with equestrian related Spink silverware such as horse-head stirrup cups and ornate polo trophies
After a closely fought game, between Snake Bite and Confido, the eventual victors were Snake Bite 9 goals to 6. Having waited with anticipation for the players to dismount and file into the members enclosure, the finely Spink-made medals were presented by Spink’s Edward Hilary Davis, including a special neck decoration for the Best Player of the Match. Special guest His Excellency the Hungarian Ambassador (a former cavalryman) presented the Spink Pony Rug to the Best Playing Pony of the match.
To have something designed and manufactured by quality craftsmen, is often the perfect gift. |
