While filling out your PCGS submission form, you may have noticed a column that asks for a minimum grade. What is a minimum grade? Are you supposed to guess the lowest grade your coin will qualify for? The minimum grade is actually an option typically used for our crossover service. If you are submitting a coin from a different grading service but you only want it reholdered by PCGS under certain conditions, you will indicate those conditions in the minimum grade column.
There are four minimum grade options available to you: Current, Any, Details, or Other Grade.
Current
If you only want your coin to be removed from the current holder and placed in a PCGS holder if it gets graded the current grade or higher, write “Current” in the minimum grade column. If the grading team determines that the coin does not meet the current PCGS grading standard for the grade listed on the holder it will not be removed and placed into a PCGS holder. The coin will be returned to you as is.
Any
If you want the coin to be removed from its current holder and placed in a PCGS holder as long as it receives any numerical grade, 01-70, write “Any” in the minimum grade column. If the grading team gives the coin a numerical grade, even if it is lower than the grade on the original holder, the coin will be removed from its holder and placed in a PCGS holder. If the grading team determines the coin is genuine but does not qualify for grading, it will not be reholdered and will be returned to you as is.
Details
If you want the coin to be removed from the current holder and placed in a PCGS holder as long as it qualifies for PCGS encapsulation, write “Details” in the minimum grade column. Your coin will be removed from the current holder and placed in a PCGS holder regardless of whether it is given a numerical or Details grade. If the grading team determines that the coin does not qualify for PCGS encapsulation, it will be returned to you in the current holder.
Other Grade
If you want to specify a minimum grade that is different from what is already on the holder, please write that grade in the minimum grade column. For example, if your coin is currently graded MS65, but you would be okay with it being graded MS64 in a PCGS holder, write “MS64” in the minimum grade column. If the grading team determines that the coin does not meet the current PCGS standard for the minimum grade indicated, it will not be removed and placed into a PCGS holder. The coin will be returned to you as is.
If you do not write anything in the minimum grade column, PCGS will assume that the minimum grade is the grade currently on the holder.
