The Canadian silver dollars struck from 1935 through 1967 are easily among the most popular coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. These large, 80% silver coins feature the reigning British monarch at the time of the coin’s issue on the obverse. The reverse, during most years, generally depicts a Canadian voyageur and indigenous man in a canoe under the Northern Lights. However, several dates were struck with special commemorative reverses, including the 1964 Canada Dollar.

The 1964 Canadian silver dollars honor the centennial of the Charlottetown Conference of 1864, which sparked a series of events resulting in Canadian confederation in 1867. Charlottetown is the capital of Prince Edward Island, a Canadian province north of Nova Scotia, east of New Brunswick, and about 150 miles east of the Canadian border along Maine.

The obverse of the 1964 Canada Charlottetown Dollar carries a bust of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Mary Gillick. The reverse features a design by Dinko Vodanovic and Thomas Shingles with four emblems reflecting the English (rose), French (fleur-di-lis), Irish (shamrock), and Scottish (thistle) influences of Canadian culture. It was a one-year-only commemorative coin that saw use in general circulation; it was also issued in proof-like sets, with many others saved by collectors in uncirculated condition.

The mintage figures for the 1964 Canada Charlotteville Dollars include 7,296,832 business strikes and 1,209,000 proof-like strikes. In general, prices for the 1964 Canada Dollar tend to ride the prevailing winds of the bullion market, with small premiums above spot for pieces in uncirculated or proof-like.

That being said, superior specimens command exceptional prices. The sole finest PCGS-encapsulated example, graded MS66+, took $2,880 in a June 2023 Heritage Auctions offering. No matter the grade of the coin, the PCGS Set Registry offers Canadian coin categories that accommodate the 1964 Canada Dollar as well as other issues from the nation’s silver dollar series.
